Kith and Kin Educational Schools Marks World Book Day with Literary Presentations, Calls for Strong Reading Culture

7-3-2026

Kith and Kin Educational School on Thursday, March 5, 2026, celebrated World Book Day with a colourful literary event that brought together students, educators, parents and guest speakers to promote reading, writing and intellectual development among young learners.

The event, held at the school Excellence Hall, featured book reviews, dramatic performances, musical renditions and motivational talks aimed at encouraging students to cultivate a strong reading culture and develop essential life skills.

The 2026 edition of the programme was themed “Skill-Up Reading and Writing,” reflecting the school’s commitment to strengthening literacy and communication skills among pupils and students.

The programme was moderated by Mr. Moshood Alabi, a language expert and Course Coordinator in the English Unit of the General Studies Department at Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

Opening Ceremony

The ceremony was formally declared open by a pupil of Kith and Kin Montessori School, Miss Shittu Anjolaoluwa, who welcomed guests and participants to the event.

In his keynote address, the school Chief Learning Officer (CLO), Chief Kaoli Olusanya, emphasized the importance of collaboration between parents and schools in shaping the academic and moral development of children.

He stressed that education should not be left solely to teachers, urging parents to play an active role in their children’s learning process.

“Training children is a combined effort of the home and the school. It should not be left only to teachers. We have to work together, particularly in this age of technology and digital social influence,” Olusanya said.

He noted that technological devices have become a dominant influence in the lives of many children, often reducing the time they devote to reading and intellectual development.

“Today, technology has a greater influence on our children. Many spend more time with telephones and television. Parents must therefore monitor their children and encourage them to read books,” he advised.

The CLO further encouraged students to develop what he described as “humane intelligence”, explaining that success in the modern world requires a balance between human creativity and technological knowledge.

“To become successful in life, you must hone humane intelligence. When this is combined with artificial intelligence and digital skills, you will become a better person,” he said.

The education advocate also highlighted the role of mentorship in achieving success.

“Every successful person has a mentor. You cannot achieve success alone; someone has to guide and mentor you,” he added while urging students to cultivate a lifelong reading habit.

Book Reviews and Literary Reflections

A major highlight of the programme was the review of the book “Double Jeopardy” by its author, Mrs. Adebukola Alamu, a serial entrepreneur.

While discussing the inspiration behind her work, Alamu narrated how her father, Chief Kaoli Olusanya, played a significant role in nurturing her writing abilities.

She encouraged students to develop multiple skills and remain open to diverse opportunities in life.

“In life, you cannot remain in just one profession. Even as a doctor, you can still explore other talents such as writing, playing musical instruments or drumming. Opportunities are endless,” she said.

Another book reviewed during the event was “One Ring at a Time,” written by Mr. Sulaimon-Oba Bilaimin, Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Bilaimin explained that the book focuses on the concept of “ladders to success,” which he described as essential stages individuals must climb in their journey to achievement.

“These ladders are essential because when you skip a particular step on your way to the top, something will be missing. For instance, if you miss the ladder of character, no matter how successful you become, something important will be lacking,” he said.

He also spoke on other important ladders such as perseverance, experience and vision, encouraging students to build strong character and discipline.

“Character opens many doors and opportunities that you may never believe your real self can open,” he stated.

Bilaimin further reminded the students that education goes beyond classroom learning.

“There are many things you will learn outside the classroom. Learning does not only happen in school or at home,” he noted.

Encouraging students to remain confident in their abilities, he added:

“Everyone has something unique that society needs. The moment you stop believing in yourself, you begin to move closer to failure.”

Cultural and Student Performances

The event also featured a variety of student-led presentations including book reviews by pupils and students, dramatic playlets, and a saxophone rendition, all of which entertained guests while reinforcing the theme of reading and creativity.

Students who participated in the book review segment were recognised and presented with awards for their outstanding performances, as part of efforts to encourage literary engagement among young learners.

Dignitaries and Guests

The event attracted parents and members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), including Mrs. Ayodeji Mariam, Barr. Adikwaone Levi, and Mrs. Muritala Munirat.

Also present were the school Principal, Mr. Julius Oregbesan; the head of Kith and Kin British Academy, Mr. Bello; the Head Teacher of Kith and Kin Montessori School and Chairman of the Event Committee, Mr. Olusegun Adebayo; and the Head Teacher of Kith and Kin Nursery and Primary School, Mr. Olusoji Olaniji.

In recognition of their contributions to the success of the event and their commitment to promoting literacy, Mr. Moshood Alabi, Mrs. Adebukola Alamu, and Mr. Sulaimon Oba Ola Balarin were also honoured with awards.

The celebration concluded with renewed calls for students to embrace reading, creativity and character development as essential tools for academic excellence and lifelong success.
