KKIC Students Explore the Upside Down House in Victoria Island, Lagos

The Upside Down House: A Gravity-Defying Marvel in the Heart of Lagos

Students of KKIC today visited the Upside Down House, a remarkable architectural attraction located in Victoria Island, Lagos. This one-of-a-kind structure challenges conventional design and offers an unforgettable, immersive experience.

Rooted in history, the house traces its origins to Mr. Akinseye Pedro, an Afro-Brazilian returnee whose original home reflected the distinct Afro-Brazilian architectural style introduced by formerly enslaved people who returned from Brazil. To preserve this cultural legacy during a period of demolition in Lagos, his grandson, Emmanuel Pedro, initiated the relocation of the house to the Afro-Brazilian Cultural Centre in Ibeju-Lekki. However, during transit, a powerful storm struck as the house arrived at Landmark in Oniru, causing it to flip and astonishingly land on its roof—yet remain structurally intact.

Now situated at Plots 3 & 4, Water Corporation Road, within the dynamic Landmark ecosystem, the Upside Down House has become a landmark attraction—the first of its kind in Nigeria and West Africa. From the outside, the house appears dramatically inverted. Inside, visitors find a fully furnished duplex, complete with bedrooms, living areas, kitchen, and household items—all installed upside down on the ceiling, creating a mesmerising optical illusion where the ceiling becomes the floor.

More than just a visual spectacle, the Upside Down House offers a playful and interactive experience that captivates and entertains. Every room is thoughtfully designed to challenge visitors' perceptions and evoke awe, laughter, and curiosity.

For our students, the visit was both educational and entertaining. From the striking exterior to the mind-bending interior, the experience sparked wonder, engagement, and excitement. It was undoubtedly a memorable adventure—one that our students will cherish for a long time.
